HISTORY

The Statsraad Lehmkuhl is the oldest and largest of the great Norwegian sailing ships. Built in 1914 as a training ship for the German merchant navy, not until 1923 was she launched as a training ship under the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association – with all thanks due to Cabinet Minister Kristoffer Lehmkuhl from which this proud ship takes her name.

Her service as a training ship came to an end in the 1970s, and for many years she was laid up. In 1986 she was recommissioned and is currently owned and operated by Stiftelsen Statsraad Lehmkuhl (The Foundation for the Tall Ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl). The aim is to keep the vessel under sail, and in recent years the Norwegian Marine Defence has used it for cadet training. In addition, Statsraaden Lehmkuhl is dependent on paying passengers keen to experience daily life at sea as it is lived aboard a great sailing ship. Accommodation is still in hammocks on the orlop deck, and all hands are required to sail the vessel.
